NOTES FROM LAST GAME – CINCINNATI 73, @ASU 66 / JAN. 25, 2025
•Despite a game high-tying 25 points from Jalyn Brown – her eighth 20-point performance of the season and sixth in her last nine games – the Sun Devil women's basketball team fell to Cincinnati 73-66 on Saturday.
Kennedy Fauntleroy scored 16 points, one point short of matching her season high. Tyi Skinner scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half for the Sun Devils, who connected on 50 percent of their 3-pointers (7-14) in the game.
• The Bearcats scored 38 percent of their points at the line where they made 28-39 for the game. Nearly half of their 29 fourth quarter points came the same way as they hit 82 percent (14-17) of their free throws in the final 10 minutes.
• Brown was perfect at the line making all 12 of her free throws on Saturday. As a team the Sun Devils connected on 79 percent (19-24) of their attempts.
• For the fourth time this season, the Sun Devils had the exact number of rebounds as the opposition. Brown led the way with nine boards, one short of giving her a double-double for points and rebounds. Nevaeh Parkinson pulled down six (also scored six points) and Jazion Jackson had five to go with one assist and two steals.
• After scoring 20 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third quarter, it appeared the Sun Devils were on course to win the game when Parkinson's second layup in 37 seconds gave ASU a 57-46 advantage, matching its biggest lead of the game. At the time, there was little indication that the Bearcats were capable of making a comeback. They had scored 28 points in the first half and had not scored more than 16 points in any of the first three quarters.
• It appeared the Sun Devils were on the verge of growing their lead even more as Parkinson's two field goals early in the fourth quarter made it nine of 10 shots the Sun Devils made going back to the third quarter. At the same time, the Bearcats had made only two of their last 13 attempts.
• As it turned out, the Sun Devils made only two of their final 14 shots.
• After Brown's layup put ASU up 59-50 with 5:47 remaining, their scoring consisted of four free throws and one 3-pointer the rest of the way. During that same span, the Bearcats outscored ASU 23-7 to come away with the win. Fourteen of those 23 points came at the foul line.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
• Wednesday's game will start the second half of Big 12 Conference play for the Sun Devils, who are currently in 12th place.
• The Sun Devils are currently in a stretch in which they are facing three top 25 teams in four games: at then-No. 11 K-State (Jan. 19), vs. then-No. 16 West Virginia (Jan. 22) and Wednesday's game at No. 24 Oklahoma State. Earlier this season ASU fell to then-No. 14 Kentucky 77-61. In the Big 12 opener on Dec. 21, ASU lost Utah 102-82 (the Utes were not ranked at the time and dropped out of the Top 25 after being ranked ranked as high as No. 22 earlier this month).
• Jalyn Brown (10x) and Tyi Skinner (8x) have combined to lead or tie for the team lead in scoring 18x this season. Brown has led the Sun Devils in scoring in five of their last six games. Also among the single-game scoring leaders have been Nevaeh Parkinson (2x), Jyah LoVett (1x) and Kennedy Fauntleroy (1x).
• Skinner (18/21 games) and Brown (14/18 games) have combined to score in double figures 32x. The two have also combined to score 20 or more points 13x: Brown 8x and Skinner 5x. Six of Brown's eight 20-point games have come in her last eight games. Her season-high 32 points at K-State (Jan. 19) represents the highest single-game total by a Sun Devil this season. Skinner scored a career-high 30 points in ASU's season opening win over Jacksonville St.
• Jyah LoVettwho has scored in double figures 12x this season, had a streak snapped earlier this month in which she scored in double figures in six straight games (averaged 14.7 points and connected on 54.5 percent of her shots during that stretch). Eight of LoVett's double-figure scoring games have come in her last 11 games.
• Kennedy Basham has had multiple blocks 12x this season, including a career-high seven rejections at San Francisco (Dec. 17).

WHAT IFS AND MIGHT HAVE BEENS
The Sun Devils, who have eight new players on this season's roster, have experienced the ups and downs that can sometimes go with combining the talents of several outstanding players. That factor alone could account for the Sun Devils' current 8-13 record. Some of the near misses...
• Against Arkansas State, the Sun Devils trailed by 13 with 6:15 remaining. After a 19-5 run, ASU was suddenly up by one with 1:01 remaining. Arkansas State scored the last five points of the game to claim the win.
• After going into the half with a 42-33 win vs. Grand Canyon, the Sun Devils were outscored 37-17 in the second half.
• At Coppin State, ASU was unable to score in the final 53 seconds to break a 61-61 tie. The Eagles would go on to win in OT.
• Despite a stout defensive effort and a plus-12 advantage on the boards, the Sun Devils came up on the short end of a 57-50 decision at UC Davis. For the second straight game the Sun Devils held the opposition to the fewest points they have given up this season and allowed the Aggies to shoot only 37 percent. Unfortunately for ASU, it struggled to put the ball in the basket as it made just 28 percent of its shots and knocked down one of its 14 attempts from long range. Down by eight entering the fourth quarter, the Sun Devils did not show any letup, methodically trimming the Aggies' advantage. Besselink's layup got the Sun Devils within two points, 44-42, with 5:36 remaining. ASU was within one possession three more times but did not come away with points in each instance. After Maggie Besselink's earlier field goal got ASU within two, the Sun Devils were only able to connect on three of their 14 shot attempts in the final five minutes of the game.
• At San Francisco, the Sun Devils were unable to take advantage of a 27-point performance from Skinner and a career-high and a tremendous all-around performance from Basham, who scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had a career-high seven blocks. The difference in the game was at the free throw line, not in accuracy – ASU made 82 percent of its attempts and San Francisco made 83 percent – but in the number of opportunities. By game's end, the Dons had more than three times as many attempts (29-35) as the Sun Devils (9-11). Still the Sun Devils were tied at 57-57 with 1:09 remaining. After the Dons took a six-point lead, Skinner knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and missed on a third that would have tied the game and sent it to overtime.
• ASU came up short in what would have been the biggest comeback in program history in a 90-83 loss to Iowa St. on Jan. 8. Down by as many as 20, ASU was within three points with 13 seconds remaining. An ASU win would have eclipsed the record for the biggest comeback in program history: 18 points vs. Utah on Feb. 17, 2019, a game in which the Sun Devils scored the last 20 points of the game to edge the Utes 60-58.
• At then-No. 11 Kansas State (Jan. 19), ASU trailed by two after one quarter, by six at the half and were able get back within seven three times in the fourth quarter after falling behind by as many as 17.
• Led Cincinnati (Jan. 25) by nine points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for ASU, a 23-7 Cincinnati down the stretch prevented the Sun Devils from coming away with the win.
