ABOUT THE BRIANN JANUARY CLASSIC
The second edition of this annual event is named for Briann January, a four-year member Sun Devil Women's Basketball (2006-09). Her play helped catapult ASU into one of the nation's best on an annual basis.

The winner of the first two Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year awards (2008 and 2009), January earned honorable mention All-America recognition from the Associated Press and WBCA in 2009. During her career, the Sun Devils won 77 percent of their overall games (104-32), 82 percent of their Pac-10 games (59-13) and qualified for the NCAA Tournament all four years, including ASU's only two Elite Eight appearances (2007, '09).

January was drafted by the Indiana Fever with the sixth overall pick in the 2009 WNBA draft. She won a WNBA championship with the Fever in 2012 and was selected to play in the 2014 WNBA All-Star Game. January also played for the Phoenix Mercury, Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm during her 14-year WNBA career. She earned WNBA All-Defensive first-team recognition five times and second-team honors twice.

In November 2021, January, currently an assistant coach for the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, became the third Sun Devil women's basketball player to have her jersey – No. 20 – honored and hung from the rafters of Desert Financial Arena. In October 2022, January became the most recent women's basketball player inducted into the Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame.

PAC-12 RANKINGS OF NOTE (AS OF NOV. 29, 2023)
• As a team, ASU leads the Pac-12 in FT attempts per game (22.6/34th in the nation) and is 3rd (48th in the nation) in FTs made per game (15.3) and fewest turnovers per game (15.3).
Jaddan Simmons leads the Pac-12 lead in FT attempts (50/4th in the nation), is 2nd in FTs made (41/7th in the nation), 3rd in minutes per game (33.38), 9th in FT pct. (82.0) & steals per game (2.1) and 16th in assist-to-TO ratio (1.73).
Trayanna Crisp is 12th in the Pac-12 in minutes per game (31.91).
Journey Thompson is tied for 14th in offensive rebs per game (2.25).

NOTES FROM LAST WEEK'S VIRGIN ISLANDS PARADISE JAM
• After starting the three-games-in-three-days event with a setback against current No. 10 Texas, the Sun Devils bounced back in impressive fashion with wins over 2023 NCAA Tournament participant South Florida (66-49) and 2023 WNIT participant High Point (77-69).
Treasure Hunt and Jalyn Brown were both named to the Reef Division All-Tournament Team of the Paradise Jam. Hunt averaged 14.7 ppg and found her shooting touch to the tune of 56 percent (19-34 FGs), including 50 percent (5-10) from long distance. In ASU's two wins, Brown connected on 54 percent of her shots (13-24) and led the team in scoring (17.0 ppg).  In ASU's win over South Florida, Brown scored 10 of her 14 points and hit both of her 3-pointers during a game-changing third quarter in which ASU outscored South Florida 24-6. She added a game-high 20 points in ASU's win over High Point to close out the tournament.
• In the win over South Florida, Trayanna Crisp (career high-tying 17 points), Hunt and Brown (14 points each) combined for 45 of ASU's points. Hunt and Sandra Magolico (first career start) each made their first start of the season while Brown, who started the first two games of the season, was back among the first five for the first time since an injury caused her to miss two games. Magolico's impact was swift as she scored eight points and – equally if not more important – led ASU's rebounding effort with eight boards and also tied for the team lead in steals with three.... Maggie Besselink (six rebounds, two assists) and Kadidia Toure (nine points, six rebounds) all played a starring role in helping the Sun Devils finish plus-six on the boards (38-32) against a South Florida squad that entered the game among the Top 50 teams in the nation in rebounding margin (+10.8)... Another category where the Sun Devils (5-2) had a 180-degree turnaround from their performance vs. Texas was in turnovers where they tied a season low with 11 and converted those miscues into 17 points. Jaddan Simmons had a team-high four assists (zero turnovers) and also tied for the team lead with three steals.
• Against High Point, Brown's 20 points represented a new career high, while Hunt just missed a double-double with season highs in points (19) and rebounds (game-high eight boards). Simmons provided ASU with a solid all-around effort, scoring nine points (2-3 FGs, 5-6 FTs), grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists... As a team, ASU shot 50 percent for the game, the first time it shot 50 percent or higher since a win at San Diego on Dec. 18, 2021.... ASU led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, then spent the last 30 minutes trying to ward off the pesky Panthers, who got within a single possession a number of times, the last instance after a High Point layup cut ASU's lead to 55-52 with 8:18 remaining. ASU countered with five straight points – a jumper by Brown and a 3-pointer by Hunt – and then answered another High Point bucket with Hunt's second 3-pointer in 38 seconds to extend its lead to 63-54 with under five minutes remaining.

SERIES NOTES VERSUS THE COMPETITION
• Despite the relative proximity of the two schools, this will be only the third all-time meeting between ASU and Pacific. ASU claimed the first game, 90-65, on Nov. 20, 1982 at the Straw Hat Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Tigers ended ASU's 2011-12 season with a 77-62 home win in the first round of the 2012 postseason WNIT.
• It will also be the third all-time meeting between ASU and Xavier. ASU was victorious 75-57 in 2008 in Tempe and Xavier held serve on its home court the following year in Cincinnati... The first meeting came during Briann January's senior year, a season that culminated with Sun Devil Women's Basketball's second NCAA Elite Eight in three seasons. January scored a game-high 16 points, tied her career high with nine assists and had three steals in the win.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
• In its first eight games, ASU has had five different players lead or tie for the team lead in scoring: Jaddan Simmons (3x), Kadidia Toure (3x), Trayanna Crisp (3x), Jalyn Brown (1x) and Treasure Hunt (1x).
• In the rebounding department, six different Sun Devils have led or tied for the team lead: Maggie Besselink (4x), Journey Thompson (2x), Toure (1x), Mallory Miller (1x), Sandra Magolico (1x), Hunt (1x).
• Simmons (935 points) is 65 points away from reaching 1000 for her career. Not including ASU's game vs. Texas, Simmons has 25 assists and only seven turnovers in ASU's other seven games.
• Crisp has scored a career-high 17 points twice this season and has scored in double figures in all but one game.
• Hunt last four games: 12.8 ppg 56.4 FG percent (22-39).
• During earlier three-game stretch (game Nos. 2-4), Toure averaged 19.0 ppg and 9.3 rebs per game. She posted her first career double-double with career highs in points (22) and rebounds (14) to go with 3 steals vs. San Francisco (Nov. 13). Toure leads ASU in FG pct. (50.3).

IN CASE YOU ARE JUST JOINING US
• ASU started 3-0 after home wins over UTSA (70-55/Nov. 6), Montana State (75-62/Nov. 10) & San Francisco (77-69/Nov. 13). In the first half of its first three wins, ASU averaged 45.3 points & hit 49.5 pct of its shots. In the win vs. UTSA, ASU tied last season's highest point total in a half on its way to a 49-23 halftime lead. Against Montana State (Nov. 30), ASU scored 30 points in the first quarter, representing the third time it has scored 30 or more points in a quarter under head coach Natasha Adair.
• In its loss at Grambling State (Nov. 16), ASU scored 32 points and shot 38 pct. in the first half while allowing the Tigers to score 45 points. Down by as many as 17, ASU came back to tie the game at 67-67 before the Tigers hit game-winning 3-pointer in final seconds.
• ASU is averaging 17.5 ppg off opponent turnovers this season. It scored a season-high 31 points off TOs at Grambling State (Nov. 16).
• ASU has allowed 13 or fewer points in a quarter 11 times, including four instances in single digits.
• After Montana State cut a 20-point deficit to four with seven mins remaining in the game, ASU answered with a 10-0 run. It allowed the Bobcats to shoot just 17 percent (2-12) in the fourth quarter.
• After allowing 70 points in its first loss of the season at Grambling State (70-67 on Nov. 16), ASU responded with a 72-40 win over Idaho State. The Bengals' final point total was the fewest given up by ASU since a 49-40 win over VCU on November 27, 2020.
• After a minus-15 outing on the boards (47-32) in 84-42 loss to then-No. 12 Texas (Nov. 23), less than 24 hours later ASU had to face a South Florida squad that entered the game among the Top 50 teams in the nation in rebounding margin (+10.8). ASU rose to the challenge and outrebounded the Bulls 38-32 in its 66-49 win.
• ASU scored a double-digit point total in each of first 20 quarters. Overall, it has scored in double figures in 30 of 32 quarters.

WELCOME BACK
Maggie Besselink and Morasha Wiggins have both provided ASU with significant contributions this season. What distinguishes them from the other returning players? Both missed all of last season due to injury. Besselink, who had not played in a game since Feb. 6, 2022, was not only in the starting lineup in the season opener, but ignited ASU's offense after hitting back-to-back triples in the first quarter vs. UTSA. She scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to post her second career double-double at Grambling State on Nov. 16. She also scored 10 points in wins vs. UTSA and Idaho State.

Wiggins made her Sun Devil debut in ASU's win over San Francisco (Nov. 13), scoring 8 points and hitting all 4 of her free throws. She is averaging 12.6 minutes per game in the 6 games she has played and has made 50 percent of her shots (6-12).

ALL-PAC-12 STANDOUT TYI SKINNER TO MISS 2023-24 SEASON
Although the Sun Devil women's basketball team's overall health is a 180-degree difference from last season, the squad was dealt a tremendous blow when Natasha Adair announced Oct. 4, 2023 that senior guard Tyi Skinner will miss the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury.

Skinner, who last season earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors from the league's coaches and All-Pac-12 recognition from media who cover the league, quickly established herself as one of top scorers in the Pac-12 and one of the most exciting players in the nation to watch in her first season in Tempe.

In 2022-23, Skinner scored 20 or more points 15 times, including a career-high 29 points on two occasions. A starter in all 28 games, Skinner went on to average 19.3 points per game, the most by a Sun Devil since the 1988-89 season. She concluded her first campaign in the Maroon and Gold among the leaders in the Pac-12 in points per game (19.3/2nd/27th in the nation), 3-pointers per game (2.43 per game/2nd), minutes per game (36.59/3rd/29th in the nation), free throws made (79/3rd)  and attempted (91/4th), steals per game (1.71/5th), 3-point FG percentage (34.7/6th) and free throw percentage (78.1/8th).

RECAPPING THE 2022-23 SEASON
Despite a spate of unlucky injuries to key personnel, the Sun Devils had several noteworthy accomplishments during Adair's inaugural season in Tempe. The accomplishments included...
• Starting 5-0 for the first time since 2002-03.
• Finishing the season No. 2 in the Pac-12 and 10th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (12.3). Only ASU's 2017-18 squad averaged fewer turnovers per game (11.7) in a season.
• Even with all its injuries, ASU nearly pulled off three Top 25 upsets in the season's final five games: vs. No. 21 Colorado (62-70), vs. No. 4 Utah (69-74) and vs. No. 19 UCLA (70-81-OT) in the first round of the Pac-12
Tournament. After trailing the Bruins by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, the Sun Devils staged a furious rally to take a two-point lead in regulation before falling in overtime. The win would have been ASU's biggest comeback in school history.
• In their 75-73 win at Oregon State, the Sun Devils overcame their second-largest deficit in school history (17 points). The victory was also No. 175 of Adair's career.
• Individually, Sun Devil guards Jaddan Simmons (Pac-12 All-Defense honorable mention) and Tyi Skinner (All-Pac-12 honorable mention) comprised one of the most talented backcourts in the country. Both players earned Pac-12 honors as voted on by the league's head coaches. Skinner, who finished second in the Pac-12 and 27th in the nation in scoring (19.2 ppg), was also named to the media's 15-member All-Pac-12 team.
