Wasatch Classic Awaits Gym Devils

Sun Devil Gymnastics is back on the road for another podium meet this Monday, competing in the Wasatch Classic against Boise State, Iowa State and San Jose State.
For the rotation order, Arizona State gets the traditional Olympic order (starting on vault, ending on floor). Iowa State will start on bars, Boise State on beam and San Jose State on floor.

Sun Devil Outlook
Arizona State (1-3, 0-0 Big 12)
- The Gym Devils began the year at the Lone Star Collegiate Invitational in San Antonio last Saturday. The team finished in fourth place out of five teams with a 194.750, beating Temple.
- There were a number of new faces in lineups for the Sun Devils in the season opener. There were three who made their collegiate debuts: Halle Braaflat (vault, bars, floor), Caroline Lichtman (vault, beam) and Tiara Platkin (bars). Additionally, Jenna Blair made her ASU debut, competing on vault and floor and earning career highs on both.
- Of the 24 routines, 13 were returning Gym Devils that had competed on that event previously.
- Junior Kimberly Smith competed in the all-around for the first time in her career, making her collegiate debuts on vault and bars. She had the second-highest floor score of the meet with a 9.900, which is her second score of 9.900 or better in her career. In the all-around, she earned a 38.850.
Opponent Outlook
Boise State (2-1, 0-0 MWC)
- The Broncos started off their season in a quad meet at Washington. The team came in second place, taking down Washington and No. 29 UC Davis. Fifth year Emily Lopez took home the bars title, marking the only event title for Boise State.
- Prior to the Wasatch Classic, Boise State will be at No. 15 Georgia this Friday.
- Boise State entered the 2025 season as the favorites to win the Mountain West after winning the inaugural Mountain West Gymnastics Championship in 2024 and holding a 20-5-1 record. The Broncos qualified for the play-in meet, falling to BYU.
- Arizona State holds a 13-4 record all time over the Broncos, with the most recent meeting of the two teams coming in 2022. The Sun Devils took home the win, 196.800-195.775.
Iowa State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12)
- After losing to LSU in their season opener, the Cyclones won the Iowa State Tri-Meet with a score of 195.100. The team had five event winners, taking home all events except for bars.
- In the first Big 12 head-to-head meet of the year, Iowa State will be at No. 4 Utah on Friday this week prior to the quad meet on Monday.
- Iowa State finished the 2024 season at No. 29 in the Road to National Rankings, and qualified for the NCAA Gymnastics Regionals.
- The Sun Devils hold a 4-3 record over the Cyclones all-time, with the first-matchup coming in 1980. The last time the two squads faced off was in 2018, where the Cyclones took first in the Arizona State Quad Meet and the Sun Devils came in second.
- This will not count towards the Big 12 conference record. Solely head-to-head meets will count for conference play.
San Jose State (0-1, 0-0 MWC)
- The Spartans started off their season with a loss at Sacramento State, but took home three event titles and the all-around, winning all events but bars.
- Before the quad meet on Monday, San Jose State will compete at No. 14 Oregon State on Friday.
- San Jose State came in third in the Mountain West Championships in 2024. The Spartans then fell in the first round of the NCAA Championship to Southern Utah.
- Arizona State holds a 10-3 all-time record over the Spartans, with the first meeting of the two teams occurring in 1980.
