Stanford, Calif. - Sun Devil Women's Golf moved up a spot at the Stanford Intercollegiate thanks to another strong score on Saturday.

In a field that features eight of the Top-25 teams in the initial Scoreboard rankings, No. 4 Arizona State (+2/570) is in fourth place in the 19-team event. Host No. 3 Stanford has the lead at -9, with No. 7 Texas, No. 12 Virginia, and No. 14 USC rounding out the rest of the Top-5. The Maroon and Gold improved their score by two strokes and added 13 more birdies to their total. ASU continues to lead the field in par three scoring, currently sitting at three-under with no other team under par.

The Sun Devils continue to be sparked by junior Beth Coutler, as she delivered another excellent round. Coulter finished with a 69 (-2), going under par for the second straight day. She maintained her positioning in a tie for second. Freshman Isla McDonald-O'Brien joins Coulter in the Top-10, as she put together a 70 (-1) for the second consecutive day which has her tied for ninth. Junior Paula Schulz-Hanssen makes it three Sun Devils in the Top-16, as she shot even (71) to settle into a tie for 16th. Grace Summerhays improved her score by four strokes and moved 17 spots up the leaderboard.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team is still in contention for the team lead, with Beth Coulter sitting only one stroke back in the individual race. Isla McDonald-O'Brien is in position for her first Top-10 finish, while Paula Schulz-Hanssen looks to seal her 14th career Top-20 finish. The Sun Devils will play the tournament with only four golfers, as Patience Rhodes withdrew prior to the event due to injury. Despite the circumstances, ASU has still delivered a competitive effort through two days. Arizona State will have one final chance to make a move as the final round begins via shotgun start tomorrow at 8:30 AM MST.

Play for her
The Stanford Intercollegiate is once again supporting PlayForHer as part of an initiative to help raise funds in support of breast cancer research. This year's tournament is being dedicated to Arizona State Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye and her late sister, Heather Farr. Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 23 and lost her battle five years later. Supporters can help raise money by pledging to sponsor each birdie your favorite team makes, or even better, the entire field. In 2023, there were 763 total birdies made, and on average, each team made 40 birdies. The team with the most birdies will receive an award for helping make an impact through the game of golf. Consider supporting and learn more about the cause HERE.

Quotables
"Another really good performance today by this team," Coach Farr-Kaye remarked. "We are definitely hanging in there despite being one person one player down, which is really outstanding."

"Beth is having a very good tournament and she's just playing smart golf," Coach Farr-Kaye observed. "It's been a lot of fun to watch."

"Paula and Isla doing doing their work with Grace having a better day today," Coach Farr-Kaye concluded. " The goal tomorrow is to continue to do what they've done the last two days and  put in a strong team performance."

The course
The Stanford Golf Course, located in the foothills above the Stanford University campus, is home to the Stanford Men's and Women's Golf teams. The Par 71, 6,278-yard course has hosted several significant events, including the Stanford Invitational, Peg Barnard Intercollegiate, Pac-10/12 Championships, NCAA Western Regional, and the Women's NCAA Championships, USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying, and U.S. Open Qualifying. The tournament is hosted by former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, an avid golfer and Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty member. Four of the five Sun Devils have competed in at least one collegiate event at the Stanford Golf Course at the 2022 or 2023 Stanford Intercollegiate.

History at Stanford Intercollegiate
The Sun Devils will be making their 12th appearance at the Stanford Intercollegiate, first competing at the event in 1980. This is the eighth time in the last nine editions that Arizona State will be a part of the field. ASU has enjoyed its fair share of success at Stanford, winning the team title six times, most recently in 2019. Arizona State (-10/842) earned its ninth title in the Missy Farr-Kaye era, putting together their eighth-lowest score vs. par over 54 holes in school history.

The Sun Devils were also victorious at the 2009, 2007, 2004, 1995, and 1982 Stanford Intercollegiate. A pair of Sun Devil legends earned individual titles at the Stanford Intercollegiate, as Heather Bowie took home the individual crown in 1995 while Brandie Burton was the champion of the 1989 event.

Empty the notebook

  • Arizona State is one of ten teams that made the 2024 NCAA Championship and returns four members from that team.
  • The Sun Devils will face a team in the Top-10 of GOLF Channel's preseason rankings a total of 28 times this year.
  • Missy Farr-Kaye enters her ninth season as the Head Coach of Sun Devil Women's Golf. She is tied with Bobby Hurley (Men's Basketball) and Greg Powers (Hockey) as the second-longest tenured Sun Devil Athletics Head Coach. She trails only Zeke Jones, who is getting ready for his 10th year at the helm of the Sun Devil wrestling program.
  • ASU has the chance to play in the state of Arizona up to four times this year. Regular season events have them playing Superstition Mountain Golf Club (Gold Canyon), Wigwam Golf Club (Litchfield Park), and Papago Golf Club (Phoenix). Should they qualify for a regional, the Sun Devils would compete at Superstition Mountain Golf Club a second time, serving as one of six regional hosts.
