Road Trip Continues for Men's Basketball at West Virginia
Arizona State will take on the Mountaineers on Tuesday at 7 PM MST

Team Huddle vs Baylor
MORGANTOWN, W.V. - Sun Devil Men's Basketball remains on the road to complete a two-game trip against West Virginia on Tuesday at 7 PM MST.
Arizona State (10-7, 1-5) will look to snap a four-game losing streak when they take on the Mountaineers (13-4, 4-2) in their fifth road game of the season. It is the first of two straight games against Top-25 competition and the fourth overall game against a ranked foe for the Sun Devils.
The Matchup
Part two of the trip back East has Arizona State traveling to West Virginia. Much like the UCF game, this will be the first meeting between the two programs. In fact, ASU has played five new programs total this year (Gonzaga, St. Thomas, UMass). This is also the only meeting of the season between the two teams.
How to Follow
Arizona State will appear on CBS Sports Network for the second straight game when they face West Virginia on Tuesday at 7 PM MST. It is the 12th time the program will be featured on national television so far in 2024-25. Andrew Catalon (play-by-play) and Steve Lappas (analyst) are on the call. Make sure to listen to Tim Healey and Kyle Dodd on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM (KMVP).

NET Positive
The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) ranking is used in determining NCAA Tournament selections. Arizona State is 64th in the current edition. Coach Hurley's team has played in ten Quad 1 & 2 games and are undefeated in Quad 3 & 4 matchups. Three of their losses are away from home to teams currently ranked in the NET Top-20 (#19 Gonzaga, #5 Florida, #9 Kansas). ASU has a favorable average opponent NET ranking of 6, an indication of a challenging schedule.
Road Tests
Arizona State has played in some of the toughest road environments in the nation, which has prepared them for games like Tuesday. In their exhibition matchup with Duke, Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his squad experienced Cameron Indoor Stadium to start the year. Their third game of the season was at 'The Kennel', home of the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Their first Big 12 Conference game was in front of 16,000+ at the Marriott Center against BYU. ASU then made their return to Allen Fieldhouse to take on Kansas. The three programs are a combined 156-17 (90.2%) over the past four years at home. This will be the second of two straight road games, as the Maroon & Gold just played at Cincinnati.
Trophy Case
Jayden Quaintance - Big 12 Newcomer of the Week (12/23)
Joson Sanon - Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week (11/18)
Last Time Out
Sun Devil Men's Basketball could not complete a valiant comeback effort, falling to Cincinnati on the road. Arizona State (10-7, 1-5) fell behind by as many as 17, but showed fight in cutting the Bearcats' (12-5, 2-4) lead down to as little as four in the second half. Jayden Quaintance enjoyed another outstanding performance leading all scorers in the game with 15 points while matching a season-high with 14 rebounds. Alston Mason (13 points) and BJ Freeman (12 points) also scored in double figures and contributed to the turnaround in the second half. Ultimately, the Sun Devil comeback fell short with Cincinnati securing their second straight win.
Boost on the Boards
The Sun Devils put together a great effort on the glass, out-rebounding the Bearcats who ranked Top-100 nationally in rebounding heading into the game. Arizona State finished with a +9 advantage (42-33), their seventh game with 40+ rebounds as a team. This included 16 offensive rebounds, which was a new season-best. It is the most offensive rebounds since ASU had 20 against USC on March 4, 2022.
One of One
Freshman forward Jayden Quaintance has proven to be one of the nation's most unique and versatile athletes. He is currently the ONLY PLAYER IN THE NATION averaging at least 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks. He produces at that high of a level while playing 31.5 minutes per game. Quaintance is averaging exactly 10.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks with room to spare on each qualifier.
Buying Stocks
Quaintance added six more 'stocks' and has combined for 75 'stocks' (54 blocks + 21 steals) so far this season. He is the only player in the nation to boast these numbers (50+ blocks and 20+ steals). The next closest Power 4 + Big East player is Creighton senior center Ryan Kalkbrenner with 61 stocks (49 blocks + 12 steals).
Block Party
Freshman Jayden Quaintance has recorded 54 blocks thus far in the 2024-2025 season and is now the nation's leader in blocks per game (3.2) after adding five more in the matchup with Cincinnati. That is two straight games with five blocks for Quaintance. He has already surpassed Pac-12 career blocks leader Jordan Bachynski on the ASU freshman single-season blocks list. Quaintance is now only one block shy of matching the season-season record by a freshman in program history and has done it in only 17 games. He has two or more blocks in 15 of 17 games this year, including eight 4+ block performances.

Hitting the Glass
Not only has Quaintance solidified his status as a premier shot blocker nationally, he has also been outstanding on the glass. He is on pace to become the program's all-time leader in rebounds per game by a freshman, a record previously held by Ike Diogu back in 2002-03. After another productive effort on the glass last game (14 rebounds), Quaintance now has 10+ rebounds in seven games. Sansational Start
Due to injury, Arizona State was without the services of guard Joson Sanon against Colorado, Kansas, UCF, and Cincinnati. When in the lineup, he has been in the conversation for best freshman in the country during ASU's strong start. He is averaging 12.8 points per game this season, which is tied for the most among Big 12 freshman with Baylor's VJ Edgecombe. Sanon would rank first in the Big 12 shooting 47.5% (29-of-61) from three-point range this season if he qualified with enough attempts. Sanon is T25th nationally among freshman (T14th Power 4 + Big East) in points per game.
Ba-Sheer Force
Basheer Jihad has impacted the game in many ways this season. He has scored 20 or more points on four occasions, most of any Sun Devil. Jihad has been getting to the free throw line at a high rate, currently third in the Big 12 in free throws made (68) and fifth in free throw attempts (89). Lately, it has been passing that has emerged as a strength. He 18 assists over his past five games - including two straight five-assist performances - after having only 13 through the first 12 games of the season.
Mr. Reliable
Alston Mason has been a steady presence in the lineup for Head Coach Bobby Hurley at point guard. Mason has led the team in minutes in 14 of the 17 games, including playing 37+ minutes in four straight games. For the second time this season, he played all 40 minutes of a regulation contest in the game against Cincinnati (Kansas). He is now up to 35.2 minutes per game, which is neck-and-neck with West Virginia's Javon Small for the most in the Big 12 and also Top-50 nationally (49th). Mason is also shooting a team-high 80.7% from the free-throw line, which is ninth-best in the Big 12.
Free'd Up
Senior guard/forward BJ Freeman recent emergence has come at an important time with the absence of Joson Sanon. He once again scored in double figures against Cincinnati, extending his streak to seven-straight. Freeman has finished with 10+ points in 14 total games this season, the most of any Sun Devil.
80-Point Mark
The Sun Devils have scored 80 points or more nine times through 17 games this season after doing it only six times in 32 games last year. ASU is 7-2 when reaching the 80-point mark.

The 11-game schedule featured seven contests away from home and four at Desert Financial Arena in addition to the exhibition matchup with Duke prior to the season on Oct. 27. ASU faced 2024 NCAA Tournament participants Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, and Florida before Big 12 play even started.
