California Tournament Road trip for #10 Water Polo

IRVINE, CALIF. – In their fifth and final regular season tournament, No. 10 Water Polo travels to California to compete in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Feb. 21-23 at Anteater Aquatics Center. 

The Sun Devils have had success in their first four tournaments this year, compiling a 13-2 record in such games, including two tournaments where they went undefeated.


The Maroon and Gold face off against the No. 8 Long Beach State Sharks in the first round at 12:20 p.m. on Friday. Live stats will be available on the FOSH and on @sundevilwp X/Twitter. 


SUN DEVIL OUTLOOK

Arizona State (13-3, 0-1 MPSF)

  • At the Cross Conference Invitational, ASU went 4-0, outscoring their opponents 70-28. The Sun Devils continue to outscore their opponents 248-140.
  • In its four tournaments this year, Arizona State holds a 13-2 record.
  • All three of ASU's losses have come against ranked teams. One loss, against UC San Diego, came in overtime.
  • The Sun Devils are undefeated when competing at neutral site locations this season.

OPPONENT OUTLOOK
Long Beach State (5-6, 0-0)

  • The Sharks are coming off of a 18-3 exhibition win over the Toronto Golden Jets.
  • Long Beach State's six losses have all come against ranked teams. They went 3-1 at the Triton Invitational, losing to then No. 6 UC Irvine. They also lost to No. 1 USC last weekend.
  • LBSU is led by attacker Martina Cardona, who has scored 28 goals this season. Additionally, goalkeeper Chelsea Oliver has made 67 saves, leading her team.

LAST WEEKEND
The Sun Devils went 4-0 at the Cross Conference Invitational, picking up wins against Salem, Long Island, Cal State Fullerton, and Iona. Millie Quin continued to lead the team in points and goals scored, picking up 16 points over the weekend, 12 of which came off goals. All of the Sun Devils' goalkeepers saw playing time throughout the weekend, and the matchup against LIU was the fifth time this season that ASU had 10 different goal scorers in a single game. 

HISTORY VS. THE SHARKS

The last time the two programs met was during the 2024 season and resulted in a 11-9 victory for the Sharks. The overall series record is split down the middle with each team taking nine wins and nine losses. However, in the last 10 matchups, the Sun Devils have pulled away with a 6-4 lead. The last four meetings have also all been during the annual Barbara Kalbus invitational. 

MPSF LEADERS

Multiple Sun Devils sit atop the MPSF leaderboards in a variety of categories. Millie Quin sits second in both the standings for season goals (45) and season points (56). Itziar Almeda sits tied for sixth in assists with 21 and Ani Pamp is tied for ninth in spring wins with 6. In net, Keri Glad is third for saves (67) and fourth in save percentage (61.47%). Junior center Sophie Shorter-Robinson is also tied for eighth in drawn exclusions. 

YOUNG TALENT

The Sun Devils continue to receive large contributions from the freshman class. Itziar Alameda leads the team in assists, with 21, and has also scored 32 goals, second-most on the team. Karly Frangieh currently sits fourth for the Sun Devils in goals scored and points scored. She tallied up 11 goals this weekend, including six against Iona. Hannah McClaskey had a big weekend, picking up seven assists and four goals. Goalkeeper Keri Glad leads the goalkeepers in saves made, with 67 total. She added 13 this weekend.
