Bentz Breaks 50 Free Record; ASU Men Ahead of Wolfpack after Day 1 in Raleigh

Raleigh, N.C. – On the first day of competition against N.C. State in Raleigh, Sun Devil Swim and Dive battled with the NC State Wolfpack with the men's team having a 10 point lead heading into Saturday, while graduate Caroline Bentz became part of two school records Friday night.

Caroline Bentz continues to shine as a Sun Devil, In the first race of the day she anchored the 200 medley relay and swam the 50 free in 21.66 which help set the school record in the relay with a time of 1:36.17. The Virginia Tech transfer would then set a new 50 free school record, winning the race in 21.88 and breaking a 16-year-old record set in 2008 by Caitlin Andrew.

Ilya Kharun won the 200 fly convincingly by more than five seconds, setting an NC state pool record finishing in 1:38.74. He later would help win the 400 free relay, swimming a 41.56 split to cap off Friday night.

Patrick Sammon was victorious in the 200 free, winning in 1:32.63, while Andy Dobrzanski won the 100 breast in 52.26.

The ASU women went 1-2 in the 500 free, with Deniz Ertan winning the race in 4:40.19 and Alexa Reyna coming in second in 4:41.40.

The dual will continue at 7 a.m. AZT/10 a.m. AZT tomorrow and can be seen on ACC Network Extra on ESPN+.

Diving Results:

  • Kayden Hayes was the top Sun Devil finishing in 3rd in the 3m diving with a score of 261.00, just 3 points shy of her career best.
  • Lane Stallworth won the 3m diving event with a score of 306.53, being the only diver in the event to eclipse 300 points.
