Sun Devil Wrestling Opens Season with Maroon and Gold Scrimmage
Tempe, Ariz. – Sun Devil Wrestling held their annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage at Desert Financial Arena on Friday night for the opening of its 2024-25 campaign. Various wrestlers, like Richard Figueroa, Cohlton Schultz and newcomer Azizbek Fayzullaev, dazzled throughout victories to commence the 2024-25 new season.
There were a total of 10 duals in tonight's showcase across all weight classes, starting with the lightweight match between top-ranked ranked Richard Figueroa and Damian Moreno, where Figueroa came out on top, 20-4. No. 11 ranked Jesse Vasquez, debuting at a higher weight class, earned a tough-fought 4-2 win over Mykey Ramos. The 184-weight class match between Aziz Fayzullaev and Shay Addison ended with Fayzullaev taking the matchup 10-4. Heavyweight Cohlton Schultz faced an unorthodox double-header match-up against Phil Chobot and Nick Hutchins to end the scrimmage, winning 20-4 over Chobot and 6-1 by fall over Hutchins.
The Sun Devils competed in front of a lively crowd at Desert Financial Arena, serving as one of six home events for the team this season.

The Sun Devils officially begin their '24-25 season next weekend when they travel to Bethlehem, Penn., for the Journeyman Duals against both Long Island (12 p.m.) and Illinois (2 p.m.) on Saturday, Nov. 9. The following day, the Sun Devils will compete in the all-day Journeymen Wranglemania tournament.
The Sun Devils' 2024-25 campaign is loaded since the team's move to the vaunted Big 12 Conference. Of the team's 13 duals, 11 are against programs ranked within FloWrestling's preseason team tournament rankings, including meetings with a trio of top-10 teams.
