Sun Devil Athletics earns APR over 990 for ninth-straight year

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University recorded a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) average of 992 over a four-year period (2020-21 to 2023-24), as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. That number is the second highest in the Big 12 Conference. Since the 2015-16 academic year, ASU has averaged a 990-plus for each multiyear APR cohort and has been in the top two in conference rankings.
Leading the Big 12, nine Sun Devil teams earned APR Public Recognition Awards by placing in the top-10 percent of their sport for multiyear APR: beach volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, men's swimming and diving, softball and volleyball.
"Our consistently strong APR scores are a testament to the incredible work of our Office of Student-Athlete Development and the commitment of our student-athletes," said Athletics Director Graham Rossini. "Our talented team of academic coaches continue to set the standard, helping Sun Devils thrive academically and athletically. We're proud to lead in the Big 12 and remain focused on supporting our student-athletes as they pursue excellence in every aspect of their experience at ASU."
For single year (2023-24) APR scores, 10 of the 23 sports that report APR data at Arizona State earned a perfect 1000, including seven of the 13 women's teams. The Sun Devils also had impressive multiyear APR numbers, with nine teams earning a perfect score.
Within the Big 12, 10 teams were in first place for their APR multiyear averages: baseball, beach volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, men's swimming and diving, softball and volleyball.
"We are proud of the continued academic success of our student-athletes, which is reflected in this year's APR numbers," said Senior Associate Athletic Director (Student-Athlete Development and Well-Being) Andrea Lore. "Earning a multiyear APR of 990+ for the ninth-straight year shows their dedication in the classroom, combined with the support of Student-Athlete Development team, coaches, administration, and ASU faculty, and staff. Sun Devil Athletics remains committed to developing the leaders of tomorrow in the classroom, sport and life."
Nine Sun Devil squads extended streaks and reached new milestones. There are eight teams who continued streaks of perfect multiyear scores. Men's golf currently has the longest streak with 11 in a row, followed by women's golf and gymnastics, both with nine in a row. Beach volleyball has six-consecutive perfect multiyear scores, softball right behind them with five. Men's cross country, men's swimming and diving and volleyball are building their streaks, this being their second year in row with a perfect score. Women's cross country has regained a perfect multiyear score, their first time since 2018-19 and third overall.
Since the APR measurement was implemented in 2003, ASU's average for all sports has increased from its first multiyear score of 937 to its current mark of 992.
APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete, including eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the current academic culture for each sport as well as department-wide. The APR system includes rewards for superior academic performance and penalties for teams that do not achieve certain academic benchmarks. The NCAA annually honors teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The national multiyear APR score for all NCAA Division I programs is 984. The full NCAA release can be found here.
