– Sun Devil Baseball will make its 42nd NCAA postseason appearance beginning this weekend after Arizona State was selected as the No. 3 seed in the Los Angeles Regional. The four-team, double-elimination regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles will begin on Friday.

The Los Angeles Regional is hosted by UCLA – the No. 15 overall seed in the nation – and includes No. 2 seed UC Irvine and No. 4 seed Fresno State. The third-seeded Sun Devils will take on UC Irvine on Friday at 6 p.m. AZT.

The Los Angeles Regional has plenty of West Coast flair and intrigue with the Sun Devils having a fair bit of history with all three potential opponents in the regional.

Opening things up against UC Irvine, ASU will be taking on the Anteaters in the postseason for the third time in program history – notably facing UCI in the 2007 College World Series and being eliminated in an 8-7 decision in 10 innings. UCI leads the all-time series, 11-9, and ASU will look to end a six-game losing streak in the series in the regional opener. Irvine (41-15, 24-6 Big West) was the Big West regular season champion and tournament runner-up and ranked No. 20 in the nation at the conclusion of the regular season.

The Sun Devils have a rich and storied history against the host and long-time Pac-12 rival UCLA Bruins, leading the all-time series over the Bruins, 126-86. ASU split a midweek two-game set against the Bruins (42-16, 22-8 Big Ten) earlier this season in Los Angeles. UCLA would go on to earn co-Big Ten Champion honors in the regular season before advancing to the final of the conference tournament. ASU was the only team to shut out the Bruins in the regular season this year (2-0). The Sun Devils swept the Bruins in Los Angeles last year in convincing style in the final Pac-12 series between the programs, outscoring UCLA, 26-6. The Sun Devils have won six of the last eight games in the series after UCLA had taken six of the previous seven series in the matchup.

Another team that ASU is no stranger to in the postseason is Fresno State, with the Sun Devils being an unfortunate victim of the Bulldogs' Cinderella run in the 2008 postseason. Fresno State earned an auto-bid to the 2008 postseason via winning its conference title and was one of the lowest-seeded teams in the field with a No. 89 RPI. ASU was the No. 3 national seed that season, falling in the winner-take-all of Super Regional finale to the Bulldogs as FSU went on to storm Omaha en route to the program's first and only College World Series title.

Sun Devil Baseball Team/Season/Individual Quick Notes

  • The Sun Devils finished tied for fourth in the Big 12 this season with an 18-12 conference record and 35-22 record overall. ASU was one of just 16 Power Four conference teams to win 18 conference games this season.
  • The Sun Devils were the ONLY team in the Big 12 outside West Virginia to have a chance to win the conference in the final weekend of action.
  • ASU went 5-3 in its 8 games against RPI Top-25 teams (2x TCU, 2x Kansas, 1x UCLA). ASU was one of just 12 teams in the country that have played at least 5 Top-25 RPI games with a winning record and one of just 6 outside of the SEC.
  • In the regular season, ASU won 23 games against Power Four teams, the fifth-highest tally in the country (UCLA 28, Texas 27, Clemson 24, Kansas 24).
  • The Sun Devils are the only team in the country to have not lost a game by more than 5 runs this season (6-11 in neutral game vs. UNLV). This is a feat only two ASU teams have accomplished before - the 1973 team that lost just eight games total and the 1969 National Champions.
  • Out of ASU's 22 losses, the team was able to bring the game-winning or tying run to the plate in the ninth inning or later in 13 of those games.
  • The Sun Devils led the Big 12 with four First Team All-Conference selections and 12 overall selections. Matt King was named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Year and Landon Hairston was named to the All-Freshman team.
  • ASU is third in the nation with its 141 doubles this year and has recorded multiple doubles in 39 games. ASU has had a player reach 20 doubles five times under Willie Bloomquist and at least one player do so in each season (2022-p). ASU had just two players, total, reach 20 doubles from 2011-21.  11 players have recorded at least four doubles this season and eight have already reached double digits in the category.
  • ASU has had two players record 20 steals in a season (Kyle Walker, 22 and Kien Vu, 21) for the first time since the 2011 season (Zach MacPhee, 26/Johnny Ruettiger, 23). The duo are the first to hit the 20-bag mark, period, since Johnny Sewald had 21 in 2015. The Sun Devils are 37th in the nation with 113 stolen bases - an especially notable tally since the team hasn't ranked in the Top-120 in the category since it was 18th in the country with 99 in 2011. ASU's .807 average on stolen bases (113-140) is the best for the program since at least the 1998 season.
  • Isaiah Jackson leads the team with his 65 RBIs this season - notable as he hasn't played a single game higher than fifth in the batting order (once).
  • The Sun Devils now ranks second in program history (aluminum bat era) with their 627 strikeouts this season. The school record is 675 (1975). ASU is the only team in the top nine in strikeouts in the nation NOT in the SEC.
  • Arizona State showed how good was as an all-around team as the program is the ONLY team in the nation that finished the regular season in the Top-15 in batting average (7th, .320), K/9 (6th, 11.3) and fielding percentage (14th, .980). It is one of just four teams to rank in the Top-25 in each category (Georgia, DBU, Florida State).
  • Arizona State drew a record attendance of 119,956 and 3,427 people per home game this season.
